Managing scope of an Architectural project

During the initial stages of an Architectural practice, we tend to weigh, evaluate and cater to the scope of every single project that we are offered. With time, as we gain deeper insights and sound understanding of the trade; we tend to hand-pick select projects that fit well within a pre-determined scope.

What’s this SCOPE?
Have you ever had a project that took longer than expected, costing more or ending up totally different than the original idea?
You're not alone!

All projects are subject to forces that can steer digressions from the original Idea; but you can effectively control and mitigate such deviations by aligning your project needs with the project SCOPE on a periodic basis. By constantly ensuring that your project is well-aligned with the scope, you will be able to finish on time, on budget and in a hassle-free way.

In Architecture, I would like to define scope as:

  • S: Services
  • C: Creativity
  • O: Opportunity
  • P: Persistence
  • E: Economy
Scope can also be perceived as a bunch of activities required to complete any given project successfully. The scope includes various factors such as time, budget, quality, human resources, risk, closure time, opportunities for growth etc.

Scope management needs understanding of:

  • Project objectives
  • Scope statement
  • Project’s schedule
  • Cost
  • Budget

Scope is one of the nine important elements of project management:

1.     Project Integration Management
2.     Scope management
3.     Time Management
4.     Cost Management
5.     Quality Management
6.     Human Resources Management
7.     Communications Management
8.     Risk Management
9.     Procurement Management

In my next few blogs we will take a deep-dive into each of these core elements of project management.
